About Us

Since 1990 Scotland had been taking part in the British Isles Championships as an unofficial entrant. However, after a few years of unofficial participation it was felt that our nation ought to be properly recognised - and so the Scottish Short Mat Federation (SSMBF) came into being in 1994 with Robert Barr elected as President, Robert Grant as Vice President, Mrs May Barr as General Secretary, Stuart Houston as Treasurer, and General Committee Members Charle McGrachie, Drew McKay, and G Irvine.

The aim of the SSMBF was to improve the standard of short mat bowls in Scotland by helping the sport to grow around the country and to ensure that everyone had a single set of rules for the sport, based upon those used by the other nations. The SSMBF then formally applied to join the British Isles Council, and was duly accepted on 1st May, 1994 as the official body representing the sport of short mat bowls in Scotland. We had arrived.

Scotland duly took its place at all of the subsequent international events including the British Isles Championships.

Anyone wishing to join the Federation or looking for more information should contact the SSMBF Secretary (see our Contacts page).
